Bab el-Mandeb Flashpoint: 'Gate of Tears' Threatens Global Trade

As tensions escalate in West Asia, global attention is turning to a critical maritime chokepoint, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, often called the “Gate of Tears.” This narrow corridor connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean and serves as a vital artery for nearly 12% of global trade, including oil, gas, and manufactured goods moving between Asia and Europe. The situation has grown more volatile with Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen entering the conflict, raising fears of renewed attacks on commercial shipping in this corridor. Any disruption here would block access to the Suez Canal, forcing ships to reroute around Africa, adding weeks of delays and sharply increasing costs. The ripple effects could be global: rising oil prices, strained supply chains, surging freight costs, and inflation hitting consumers worldwide. With another key route, the Strait of Hormuz, also under pressure, experts warn of a potential double shock to the global energy system.
