- Video of the event went viral on Douyin, gaining over 186,000 likes in three days
A Chinese family's hilarious determination not to waste fresh durian has gone viral after they devoured 5.5 kilograms of the pungent fruit outside Chiang Mai International Airport in Thailand. The incident, which took place on September 16, was captured on video and shared on Douyin (the Chinese domestic version of TikTok) by one of the family members, Li. Within three days, the clip had garnered over 186,000 likes, leaving social media users both amused and empathetic.
The Unplanned Durian Feast Outside The Airport
Li explained that his father had purchased several boxes of fresh durian that morning, hoping the family would enjoy them before their flight back to China, reported Mothership. But after multiple meals that day, they arrived at the airport still carrying more than five kilos of the famously strong-smelling fruit. Since durian is banned on many flights due to its potent odour, the family decided to eat it on the spot.

A Struggle To Gulp Down Every Bite Of Durian
The video shows Li's father opening a plastic bag filled with durian while family members reluctantly gobbled down huge pieces of the fruit. At one point, the father appeared cheerful while opening the boxes, but the son could be seen eating with a poker face and even gagging. Each family member consumed four to five pieces of durian.
"I ate so much that I never want to see durian in my life again," Li said, adding that the family smelled of durian when they boarded the plane and had to apologise to fellow passengers.
Internet Reacts With Amusement To Viral Video
Social media users found the video both relatable and hilarious. Comments ranged from sympathy to playful teasing:
"The son is glaring... but the father looks so happy opening the boxes," noted a viewer.
A person commented, "Why are all our parents like this?" Another wrote, "Peak Asian behaviour."
"Bathroom will always be occupied now," joked a viewer. One added, "I pity whoever sat next to them on the flight."

Why Is Durian Fruit Banned On Flights?
Durian is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Despite its pungent and often unpleasant smell, durian remains a popular and expensive delicacy. However, the fruit is banned in hotels, on public transport, and on airplanes in many countries, as its overwhelming odour can make travel experiences unpleasant.
