But recently, Dunhuang has surprised travellers with something entirely unexpected: a public toilet that is designed like an ancient grotto. Yes, you read that right! At the Dunhuang Night Market, a newly renovated restroom has suddenly become a tourist attraction in its own right.
Officially named the Dunhuang Pure Realm Public Cultural Space, the two-storey facility opened its doors on August 16 and quickly began trending online. Visitors say it feels less like a bathroom and more like a small cultural museum. Decorated with murals, scented with local aromatherapy, and equipped with comfortable rest areas, it has drawn curious crowds who line up not just to use it but also to take photographs.
As per a report by South China Morning Post, the space, spread across 600 square metres, is packed with thoughtful details. Families will find a dedicated mother-and-baby room equipped with antibacterial nursing tables, child safety seats and a self-cleaning dome system. Accessible facilities are also in place for the elderly and people with disabilities. For those who simply need a break, there is a waiting area with chairs, tables,and even a self-service tea and drink dispenser.
The creative transformation has turned a utilitarian necessity into a cultural experience. Videos praising the design and facilities have been circulating widely on Chinese social media platforms.
