Commuters travelling between Thane and Navi Mumbai can now look forward to a much faster journey. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has approved a Rs 723 crore link project between Kopri in Thane and Airoli and Digha in Navi Mumbai. As per reports, it is expected to cut travel time by up to 30 minutes.
Why Is The Link Important?
The Thane-Navi Mumbai stretch is an important cross-city movement within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The route connects several residential areas with industrial zones and commercial hubs. Despite its importance, the connectivity between the two places has remained limited due to restricted routes.

As of now, commuters travelling from Thane to Navi Mumbai take the detour via the Kalwa Creek Bridge or the Mulund East-Airoli Road corridor. Both routes remain busy, particularly during peak hours.
The newly approved project aims to solve this problem by introducing a direct creek bridge. The upcoming road will create a more seamless route that reduces dependence on overburdened roads.
Revision In Plans
The approval for the new link road comes at an appropriate time when Mumbai is facing increasing pressure to enhance east-west and inter-city mobility. The residential growth has spread beyond traditional city centres. The previously manageable transport gaps have now become structural constraints for its citizens.

Earlier plans had proposed a creek bridge connecting Kopri in East Thane to Patni in Navi Mumbai. The latest approval reflects a revised alignment and updated scope. This project was included in MMRDA's latest budget. The authorities claim it will facilitate faster implementation.
