A historic castle in Wales is getting a huge makeover to turn it into a new tourist attraction. Haverfordwest Castle in Pembrokeshire has stood for centuries, but it has now received a huge £17.7 million investment from the UK Government for a fresh look.
The huge project will include “new cafe selling locally sourced food and drink and a 500-seater outdoor event space with shows and live-music expected to be programmed throughout the summer months.”
The renovation work is underway, and the castle has been closed to the public. If everything goes as planned, Haverfordwest Castle will reopen in 2028.

The renovated Haverfordwest Castle will offer visitors a new way to learn about the history of Pembrokeshire. Instead of simply reading about the past, people will be able to explore it in fun ways.

The attraction will include stories about local myths, legends, nature and forces that have influenced the region over the years. Visitors will be able to enjoy these stories through activities and digital experiences.
As per Timeout, Councillor Paul Miller, deputy leader of Pembrokeshire County Council, said, “We are excited to see this ambitious project continue apace and this next stage brings us much closer to what will be a flagship heritage attraction, boosting not only the town's economy but also the wider area.”
History
Haverfordwest Castle was first mentioned in 1188, when it was visited by Giraldus Cambrensis and Archbishop Baldwin. In 1289, Queen Eleanor, the wife of Edward I, took control of the castle. Over the years, it passed through the hands of several important owners, including Edward, Black Prince.

The castle was repaired while under royal control and later survived an attack in 1405 during Owain Glyndwr's war. By the 16th century, it had fallen into poor condition, but was later strengthened during the Civil War.
In 1648, Cromwell ordered its destruction, but it was only partly demolished. In the 18th century, part of it was turned into a prison and that building now holds the County Archives.
