Starting October 1, 2025, Emirates has enforced a strict ban on using or charging power banks aboard all its flights. "Using any kind of power bank is prohibited onboard Emirates' flights, effective from October 1, 2025," the airline said in a statement, adding, "Emirates provides in-seat charging on all aircraft, however, still recommends that customers fully charge their devices before flying, especially on longer duration flights."
A power bank is a portable, rechargeable device primarily designed to provide power to other electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and cameras.
Are Passengers Not Allowed To Carry Power Banks?
While travellers will still be allowed to carry a single power bank (under 100 Wh) in their cabin bag, it must remain unused during the flight and be stored under the seat or in the seat pocket.
Passengers are not allowed to keep their power banks in overhead bins or checked baggage. The decision came after a safety review and growing concerns about the risks posed by lithium batteries.
Why Do Airlines Discourage Use Of Power Banks On Flights?
The airline notes that power banks, which are typically powered by lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, can pose a fire hazard if damaged or overcharged. In severe cases, this can lead to thermal runaway, resulting in overheating, fires, or explosions. To mitigate these risks, Emirates is banning the use of power banks on board and requiring passengers to store them in easily accessible areas.
The airline says that safety is its top priority and that these new rules are designed to minimise risks while ensuring passenger comfort through built-in charging options available at every seat.
Emirates isn't the only airline cracking down on the use of power banks. Several major carriers, including Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, and China Airlines, have already implemented similar restrictions since early 2025. These stricter rules align with International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines, which dictate strict limits on lithium batteries in passenger luggage.
