Industrialist Anand Mahindra marked his 71st birthday on May 1, 2026, by thanking his followers for their lovely wishes. Being a travel enthusiast invested in development, Mahindra did not miss noting the inauguration of the 'Missing Link', which coincided with his birthday. Developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is expected to transform travel between the two major cities by reducing distance, easing congestion, and improving safety. The long-awaited Missing Link project was inaugurated on the occasion of Maharashtra Day.
Anand Mahindra wrote, "I've always felt fortunate that my birthday coincides with a public holiday: Maharashtra Day at home in Mumbai, and globally as International Workers' Day."
Calling the expressway a "remarkable network of bridges and tunnels", he added, "This year, there's another reason to celebrate: the inauguration today of the 'Missing Link,' a remarkable network of bridges and tunnels that finally makes the Mumbai-Pune journey seamless."
Mahindra then took a poetic turn, using the name of the expressway for a moment of introspection. "As I turn 71, it feels fitting to reflect on the 'missing links' in our own lives...the people and bonds that have been our unseen support, our emotional bridges through difficult times. And the importance of rebuilding those links, and expressing our gratitude."
He concluded his message with a warm note, writing, "Today, my wish for each of you is that you can reconnect your own missing links - those bridges that quietly held you up when you needed them most."
What The Newly-launched Missing Link Means For Travellers
Built at an estimated cost of Rs 6,695 crore, the Missing Link is being seen as a landmark in modern road engineering. The project shortens the Mumbai-Pune travel distance by around six kilometres and is expected to cut journey time by 20 to 30 minutes.
Beyond reducing travel time, the new stretch is set to improve connectivity to key tourist attractions in the region, including Lohagad Fort, Visapur Fort and the Karla Caves, making road trips in this popular corridor more efficient and appealing.
One of its key advantages is the bypass of the challenging Khandala Ghat section, known for its steep curves and accident-prone stretches. With nearly 70 per cent of traffic expected to shift to the new route, authorities anticipate smoother traffic flow as well as reduced fuel consumption.
Traffic Congestion Reported On Inauguration Day
Despite the long-term benefits, the inauguration coincided with a surge in traffic owing to the long weekend. Reports indicated significant congestion along parts of the corridor, with vehicles caught in extended queues.
Motorists travelling towards popular destinations such as Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur experienced delays, with traffic stretching from the Khed Shivapur toll plaza to the New Katraj Tunnel. Commuters reported hours-long waits as holiday traffic built along the route.
Anand Mahindra's Special Birthday Message
Alongside marking the expressway milestone, Anand Mahindra also acknowledged the large number of birthday wishes he received online. Expressing gratitude, he wrote, "I'm overwhelmed by the flood of birthday wishes today. Forgive me for not replying individually, but please know how deeply grateful I am."
He added, "X can be a vast, impersonal, even divisive platform. Yet on days like this, it feels like an extended family, radiating warmth. Thank you for being there."
