A federal court jury on Monday awarded $3 million in damages to a University of Virginia administrator that it previously found was defamed by Rolling Stone magazine's now-retracted story of a gang rape, court documents show.

A federal court jury decided Friday that a Rolling Stone journalist defamed a former University of Virginia associate dean in a 2014 magazine article about sexual assault on campus that included a debunked account of a fraternity gang rape.

Rolling Stone magazine publisher and co-founder Jann Wenner said in a video deposition that he disagreed with a top editor's decision to retract an entire article about a gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity after the story was discredited.

Rolling Stone magazine published a story in November 2014 describing in chilling detail a student's account of being brutally raped by seven men at the University of Virginia. Several days later the magazine's editors received an email from the reporter with the subject line "our worst nightmare."
