No Free Rations

The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday evening released its manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha election and focused - as other members of the INDIA opposition bloc have - on vowing to repeal changes to the citizenship law if it comes to power.

Initially, the additional free benefit under the PMGKAY was provided for a period of three months (April-June 2020) to ameliorate distress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Centre today said there is no proposal at present to extend free foodgrains supply through the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) to provide relief to ration card holders.

Sudha Devi, 30, has been queuing up at a government school in Delhi for the last four days in hope of free ration but to no avail. "They shoo us away. We just get bruised and scraped struggling in queues and then go back empty handed," she laments.

Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Saturday suspended an order that said the union territory's poorest families entitled to free rice will not get the grains from next month-end unless they can produce a certificate that their village is open defecation free and cleaned up after the move triggered sharp attacks from the Congress that call...
