The United Nations has termed the recovery of the Iraqi city of Mosul from ISIS as a "significant step" in the fight against terrorism and vowed its support to aid the displaced communities and restore rule of law in the freed areas.

Iraq will declare victory over the ISIS in Mosul during the "next few days," a senior commander said Friday, as pressure also mounts on the terrorist in Syria. ISIS, which declared a cross-border "caliphate" encompassing swathes of Iraq and Syria three years ago, is now facing twin offensives in Mosul and Raqa, its two most emblematic strongholds.

As many as 150,000 residents are crammed into Mosul's Old City, as Islamic State fighters fortify their positions in the warren of narrow streets and alleyways.

The Iraqi army will need Kurdish fighters' help to retake Mosul, the largest city under the control of ISIS, Iraqi Finance Minister Hoshiyar Zebari said, with the planned offensive expected to be very challenging.

Militants who have seized large swathes of territory while advancing towards Iraq's capital Baghdad have released 48 foreigners, including four Turks, held captive for several days. However, there is no news of the 40 Indian workers, captured near the Iraqi city of Mosul.
