Indian Ocean Mock Drill

A monster earthquake of 9.2 magnitude was simulated on Wednesday morning south of Sumatra in Indonesia for a two-day tsunami drill, in which 23 countries are participating.

Massive tsunami drills, which will simulate a series of life-threatening tsunamis rushing through the Indian Ocean, has begun this morning. Altogether, 23 nations on the Indian Ocean will be part of this drill, which will be coordinated by UNESCO.

India is participating in a major Indian Ocean-wide tsunami mock drill on September 7-8 during which thousands of people will be evacuated from coastal areas in over half a dozen states and warning and detection systems will be put to test.

Nations along the Indian Ocean are testing a UN-backed early tsunami warning system put in place after the massive 2004 wave off western Indonesia that left more than 230,000 people dead or missing.

A mock tsunami caused by a 9.2 magnitude earthquake will cross the north-west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, between 6.30 am and 5.30 pm IST today followed by an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami which will ultimately strike the coast of South Africa.
