Restaurants Turn Deaf Ear To Government, Insist On Service Charge

Two days after a Central government advisory made paying service charge at a restaurant voluntary, restaurants in the national capital have dug in their heels, insisting on levying the charge. Service charge, which ranges from 5 to 20 per cent of the bill and is added to it instead of tips, cannot be forced on the customer, the government had said.

Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik has written to the state government that 14 city pubs, which enjoy the privilege of remaining open till 3 am by virtue of being inside 5-star hotels, should fall in with the regular 1:30 am deadline in order to avoid brawls.
