A 30-year-old shepherd averted an accident in Dahod district of Gujarat located on the Delhi-Mumbai route as he ran for about a kilometre before flagging down a train after he spotted a railway track broken at a place, officials said on Wednesday.

Rail and road traffic has been disrupted as protests continue by members of the Gujjar community in Rajasthan's Bharatpur. More than a dozen trains have been diverted on the Delhi-Mumbai Railway line and the state has temporarily discontinued its bus service on the Agra-Jaipur route as a precaution.

Indian Railways will soon bring for cabinet clearance an ambitious, Rs 18,000 crore ($3 billion) plan that involves fencing off the existing Delhi-Kolkata and Delh-Mumbai routes to speed up train movement in the country's two busiest corridors.

Trains manufactured by Spanish firm Talgo may soon undertake trial runs at speeds between 160 and 200 kmph on the existing tracks on the Delhi-Mumbai route. Depending upon the results of the trial runs, the railways will consider introduction of high speed trains on other routes too, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

4,500 paramilitary personnel have been despatched to Rajasthan by the Centre to assist the state government in handling the Gujjar agitation that has hit traffic on the Delhi-Mumbai rail route and a national highway for the eighth day today.

A total 70 trains have been affected - ten of them cancelled and the others diverted - on the busy route that connects Delhi and Mumbai, as hundreds of protesters sat overnight on rail tracks in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district to demand reservation in the state for Gujjars.
