Cash-for-reforms Deal

Alexis Tsipras wound up his campaign to be re-elected Greek prime minister by declaring his victory would strike a blow for Europe's left, as final polls on Friday gave him a slim lead.

The Greek government said Tuesday that it wants to see a final deal on its international bailout hammered out by August 20, as it presented parliament with more draft legislation on the cash-for-reforms agreement.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew that a cash-for-reform deal to keep Greece in the euro zone would need the commitment of all sides, a Greek official said, ahead of a crucial summit of euro zone leaders on Sunday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, the euro zone's most powerful leaders, said Athens must move quickly if it wants to secure a cash-for-reform deal with creditors and avoid crashing out of the single currency.

Greece and its European creditors agreed on the need to reach a cash-for-reforms deal quickly as Athens missed a self-imposed Sunday deadline for reaching an agreement to unlock aid, sources close to the talks said.

Greece made a small interest payment to the International Monetary Fund on Wednesday but European lenders dashed hopes for a cash-for-reforms deal before a more crucial, bigger instalment Athens must pay next week.
