JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy has played down talk his party has allied with the BJP ahead of next year's Lok Sabha election, explaining that negotiations are still in an "initial phase" and "a lot of discussions are yet to happen".

Amid speculations of the BJP and the JD(S) coming together ahead of next year's Lok Sabha elections, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday questioned if the latter can stay true to its ideology if an alliance did happen.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said he is not bothered about the poll pact between the BJP and JD(S) for the Lok Sabha elections saying the people will back the Congress party.

The BJP has an "understanding" with the JDS for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, ex-Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said Friday morning.

Karnataka's Chief Minister designate HD Kumaraswamy has said the post will not be shared between him and the Congress -- a rotational deal that had soured his tie-up with the BJP in 2007. The details of power sharing were finalised at a key meeting last night, under which a Congress candidate will be the deputy of Mr Kumaraswamy.

Rebutting the Congress's allegations that former PM Deve Gowda's Janata Dal United is the Bharatiya Janata Party's Team B, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "It is the Congress that is secretly working with them and the two will align after the elections."

Deve Gowda, a former Prime Minister, says he had offered the Congress an alliance but was rejected by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who left the JD(S) about a decade ago to join the Congress. His son, on the other hand, who has served as Chief Minister earlier, has maintained that teaming with the Congress was unfeasible.
