Two weeks after declaring victory over ISIS in Ramadi, Iraq's elite counter-terrorism forces have pushed militants out to its eastern suburbs, but bombs littering the streets are holding up efforts to rebuild the city, officials said.

An estimated 500 people, civilians and security forces, were killed in the jihadist offensive on Ramadi, a spokesman for the governor of the Iraqi province of Anbar said.

The Islamic State jihadist group launched a coordinated attack on government-held areas of the western Iraqi city of Ramadi on today, involving seven almost simultaneous suicide car bombs, police said.

The governor of Iraq's Anbar province in the Sunni heartland said he has asked for and secured US support in the battle against Islamic State militants because opponents of the group may not have the stamina for a long fight.

Iraqi officials say insurgents have broken into a police station in western Iraq and are holding a number of police officers hostage. The deputy of the Anbar province governor, Dhari Arkan, says the Iraqi army is surrounding a police station in the town of al-Baghdadi. He says Insurgents are holed up inside and have taken police officers hostage.
