After his party failed to win a single seat in Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, who fronted the DMK campaign for the national election, offered to resign from party posts but was reportedly told his leadership is essential by his father, M Karunanidhi, who heads the party.

MK Stalin has taken back his offer to resign as the Treasurer of the DMK hours after offering to quit owning responsibility for his party's dismal performance in national election. Mr Stalin was the face of the DMK's campaign, and his party failed to get a single seat in Tamil Nadu.

The meeting with his supporters in Madurai was meant to conclude with an announcement on MK Alagiri's plan to launch a new party. But in the end, the suspended DMK leader appeared to soften his stand.

Amid speculations that he may float his own outfit, suspended DMK leader M K Alagiri on Saturday said he did not have any plan to quit the party even if he was forced out.

On the eve of his 63rd birthday, DMK chief Karunanidhi's elder son said he had asked his supporters to keep calm and reiterated that he wasn't quitting the party.

It was allegedly Mr Stalin who pushed his father to quit the government in the midst of negotiations with the Congress. Sources have told NDTV that although Mr Karunanidhi was willing to wait to hear from the Congress after three senior ministers met him, Mr Stalin was bent on calling it quits with the UPA.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday accepted the resignations of five DMK ministers and forwarded them to President Pranab Mukherjee.

Yesterday, their father and DMK chief M Karunanidhi announced the party would quit the UPA, citing India's refusal to take a strong stand against Sri Lanka at the session of United Nation's top human rights body in Geneva. Sources close to Mr Alagiri say he heard for the first time of this news on television channels.
