PayPal said it would acquire Japanese buy now, pay later (BNPL) firm Paidy in a $2.7-billion (roughly Rs. 19,840 crores) largely cash deal, taking another step to claim the top spot in an industry witnessing a pandemic-led boom.

The deal tracks rival Square Inc's agreement last month to buy Australian BNPL success story Afterpay Ltd for $29 billion.

The $29-billion takeover of Australia's "buy now, pay later" app Afterpay by US firm Square has thrown a spotlight on a sector that is growing rapidly and grabbing the attention of regulators.

Apple is said to be extending its "buy now, pay later" programme to Canada after its success in US, UK, and Europe. It allows people to pay for iPhone, Mac, and iPad over 12 to 24 months.
