Abhijit Banerjee, who was raised in Kolkata but is now a US citizen, becomes only the second person of Indian origin to win the Nobel prize for economics, after Amartya Sen in 1998. Apart from this, the other stories on the front page are retail inflation, which hit a 14-month high in September, and the retreat of monsoon, which is five times faster this year than normal.
