Highlights From The Clean-Up Drive At Mumbai: #SwachhIndia Cleanathon

Heart of the Bollywood film industry, Mumbai, participated in NDTV-Dettol Banega Swachh India Campaign. People from all walks of life gather to clean their city and make the dream of #SwachhIndia come true. From one of Mumbai's most polluted beaches, Versova to Chimney Beach, cleanup drive took place at various locations.

  • At Mumbai's Chimbai beach, which is one of the most polluted beaches in Mumbai with plastic waste as the main concern, the NGO United Way, along with other NGOs and locals of the Chimbai village has been instrumental in cleaning up a lot of the 4-feet high garbage mound that dominated the beach a few years back.
  • Harshita Narvekar, local Municipal Corporator supports citizen initiatives like waste segregation at source and recycling at Cuff Parade, organised as part of the #SwachhIndia Cleanathon.
  • Municipal workers are the foot soldiers of any campaign and therefore they can't be neglected. Seen here are Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) workers getting new gear for cleaning the cuff parade area.
  • NGO Garbage Free India organised a behaviour change campaign called 'Socho Alag', which aimed at enlightening people about waste segregation at source level, composting and keeping the surroundings clean.
  • Versova, one of Mumbai's most polluted beaches, was chosen as a cleanup site for #SwachhIndia Cleanathon. It witnessed volunteers joining hands and coming together to make the beach free from garbage.
  • TV personality Meiyang Chang took the broom in his own hands to clean up Versova beach during the 12-hour Cleanathon with Amitabh Bachchan.
  • Afroz Shah, one of the architects of Versova beach cleanup, said that his complaint on Versova was to himself and he had taken it upon himself to clean the beach. In the last two years, Mr Shah and his team of volunteers have managed to pluck out 7,800 tonnes of garbage from the beach premises. 'The United Nations has termed this cleaning activity as the biggest beach cleanup in history,' added Mr Shah.
  • Brother sister duo Khushali and Jaivardhan urged people to say no to plastic usage and should use cotton bags.
