A low-intesity blast occurred outside a restaurant on Church Street, off Bengaluru's prime Mahatma Gandhi Road. Two persons, a man and a woman, sustained injuries in the blast.

Both the injured persons were rushed to the nearby Mallya Hospital, where the woman, Bhavani, succumbed to head injuries.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner MN Reddi has confirmed that the blast was the result of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), and that it had contained shrapnel.

"There was a genric threat perception in view of the festivities and the coming New Year," said Reddi.

Karnataka's Home Minister KJ George later confirmed to NDTV that the blast was a terror attack.
