Assembly Elections: Top Leaders Address People In Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh

From Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, top leaders of the two big parties have been meeting supporters in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, where assembly elections are due.

  • Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has been touring Gujarat. On his three tours so far of Gujarat, Mr Gandhi, 47, has provided a series of photo-ops at different temples across the state including the Dwarkadheesh and Chotila temples in Saurashtra.
  • For the Congress, the support of Patidar or Patels who are demanding reservation in jobs, is crucial. Patidar quota protest leader Hardik Patel has said he will support the Congress in the Gujarat assembly elections, since the party is "openly supporting Patidars."
  • On Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third visit to his home state Gujarat last month, projects worth Rs 2,000 crore were announced. The state also had its first "roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro)" ferry service -- a Rs 650-crore initiative which the Prime Minister inaugurated, calling it his "dream project".
  • "The BJP is committed to ensuring record development in Himachal Pradesh and fulfilling the aspirations of the state's youth," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a rally in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi packed in two rallies in Himachal Pradesh on November 2 before he flew to Gujarat, where elections will be held next month. At his first rally in the key district of Kangra, the Prime Minister said there was an urgent need to "save Himachal from the Congress," which he said now only symbolises "Bhrashtachaar (corruption)", "Pariwaarwaad (family)", "Jaatiwaad (caste politics)."
