The family connections of India Inc

While some connections between the families of leading Indian business houses are well known, there are some not many are aware of. Here we take you through some of them.

Infosys and TVS, TAFE: This is one of the most famous connections, fresh in everyone's minds. Also, one can say, a rare instance when three companies are connected through family relations. Rohan Murthy, son of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, is married to Lakshmi Venu, the daughter of Venu Srinivasan and Mallika Srinivasan. Mr. Srinivasan is the CMD of TVS Motor while Mrs. Srinivasan is the head of tractor and farm equipment maker TAFE.

Future Group and Vedanta Group: Ashni, the daughter of Kishore Biyani, the founder and group CEO of Future Group, is married to Viraj Didwania, the nephew of Anil Agarwal, the founder-chairman of Vedanta group.

Videocon and Bhushan Steel: Saurabh, the nephew of Venugopal Dhoot, the chairman and managing director of Videocon, is married to Radhika, the granddaughter of Bhushan Steel's Bhushan Singhal.

Bajaj group and Aditya Birla Group: Kushagra Bajaj, the vice-chairman and joint MD of Bajaj Hindusthan Ltd, is married to Vasavadatta, the sister of Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Aditya Birla Group.

Vedanta Group and Shree Cements: Anil Agarwal's son Agnivesh is married to Puja Bangur, the daughter of Hari Mohan Bangur, who is the managing director of Shree Cement.

Kotak Mahindra Bank and Mahindra & Mahindra: Uday Kotak started Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd with financial backing from Harish and Anand Mahindra. The company converted to a commercial bank later, the first Indian firm to do so.

ArcelorMittal and OP Jindal Group: Ispat Industries, once owned by Vinod Mittal, the younger brother of Lakshmi Mittal, is now owned by JSW Steel, an OP Jindal group company. Savitri Jindal is the non-executive chairman of the group.

Aditya Birla Group and Future Group: Aditya Birla Nuvo, a unit of the Aditya Birla Group, recently acquired a controlling stake in Pantaloon Retail (India) Ltd, the flagship company of the Future Group.

Rare Enterprises and Lupin: Among all companies that are represented by their owners on various rich lists, Lupin is the only company in which investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala is invested. Mr. Jhunjhunwala runs Rare Enterprises, while Desh Bandhu Gupta is the founder and chairman of drug firm Lupin.

Reliance Industries and Oberoi Group: Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, came in as a white knight for Prithviraj Singh Oberoi, whose company EIH faced the risk of a hostile takeover from cigarettes-to-hotels conglomerate ITC.
