Bangalore Bandh News Highlights: Farmer unions and pro-Kannada organisations have called for Bandh

Bengaluru:

The umbrella organsation of Kannada and farmers' outfits 'Kannada Okkoota' called for a bandh in Karnataka today to oppose the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

Authorities have clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code in Bengaluru Urban, Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Ramanagara and Hassan districts, and declared a holiday for schools and colleges there.

Karnataka To File Review Petition Challenging Cauvery Authority Order
The Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said a review petition will be filed before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Supreme Court on September 30, stating that "we do not have water and therefore cannot release water".

Earlier in the day, the CWMA endorsed the direction of its assisting body, Cauvery Water Regulation Committe (CRWC) asking Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka To Release 3,000 Cusecs Water To Tamil Nadu Daily Till Oct 15
The meeting of Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day, until October 15. 

Taking note of it, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that he will hold a meeting with retired Supreme Court Judges today on the matter.

Over 700 Protestors Detained As Precaution, No Violence Reported: Cops
  1. A total of 785 protesters were detained and taken into custody as a preventive measure. But they were all released later, police said.
  2. Around 1,500 protesters had gathered at Freedom Park in Bengaluru as part of the protests.
  3. Security was tightened in Karnataka with heavy police deployment across the state. The Bengaluru Police had also imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure since Thursday midnight as a precautionary measure.
  4. The police also detained scores of protesters who tried to block the Bengaluru-Hosur and Bengaluru-Mysuru National Highways by staging a sit-in protest, official sources said.

Congress "Very Casual" In Its Approach Towards Cauvery Row: BJP Leader
Bharatiya Janata Party MP Tejasvi Surya lambasted the Congress government for its "very casual" approach to the issue.

"There is no coordination between the Chief Minister and the deputy Chief Minister. The state government is very casual in its approach. Are they trying to approach this issue in this duplicitous manner because it will help their INDI alliance partner, the DMK government for 2024?" he asked.

The MP from Bengaluru South alleged that the Congress is approaching the issue in a "duplicitous manner" to help its INDIA bloc partner, DMK in Tamil Nadu.

Will Ask For New Distress Formula In Sharing Cauvery Water: DK Shivakumar
  • Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said on Friday that the state will ask the Cauvery Management Authority (CWMA) to devise a new formula for sharing river water with Tamil Nadu in a rainfall-deficient year. 
  • "After today's Cauvery Management Authority meeting, a decision will be made as to what the outline of the formula in the distress year to be." DK Shivakumar, who is also holding the irrigation portfolio, told reporters in Sadashivnagar.
  • "We should be clear about the distress formula before demanding it. For that, we will first discuss about the formula (ourselves). A meeting has been called for this evening (Friday)," he added.

"Mother Cauvery Is Suffering": Sadhguru's Message To Tamil Nadu, Karnataka
Spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev on Friday called for strengthening and enhancing Cauvery river rather than fighting over depleted waters.
"Bringing large scale tree based agriculture and vegetating the 83,000 sq kms of Cauvery basin is the only way Cauvery will flow 12 months of the year in abundance," Sadhguru said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, tagging Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in his post.

"Let us strengthen and enhance Mother Cauvery rather than fighting over depleted waters. Let wisdom prevail," he added.

DK Shivakumar Says There Was "No Need" For Bandh
  • Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said there was no need for a bandh over Cauvery row as his government is protecting the interests of the State.
  • "There was no need for bandh, which some organisations have called," DK Shivakumar told reporters.
  • The Deputy Chief Minister, who holds the Water Resources portfolio, said the government ensured that no one faced hardship during the bandh.

  • Kannada Okkuta' - a blanket organisation of pro-Kannada groups on Friday have announced Karnataka bandh opposing Karnataka government releasing Cauvery river water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu state. 
  • This comes two days after observing the Bengaluru bandh which received mixed response.
  •  The bandh will be in effect from 6 am to 6 pm. 
  • Bengaluru city police have clamped Cr PC 144 section not allowing people to hold rallies or protests or congregation of more than five people. 
  • But Pro-Kannada organisations are likely to hit the streets.
  • More than 1,900 associations are supporting the bandh. 
  • Grocery shops and other non-essential shops in the state, including Bengaluru, are expected to remain closed but essential services like hospitals, ambulances and drug houses will be operational.
  • KSRTC and BMTC buses will be operational based on the situation across the state. 
  • Traffic on major roads of Bengaluru, especially in the central business district and in entry and exit points is likely to take a hit.
