The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB)'s report on the Ahmedabad-London Air India plane crash last month is based on preliminary findings and one should not jump into conclusions till the final report is released, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said on Saturday.

A probe report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) was released last night. The report points to a series of possibilities and also raises multiple questions on what transpired inside the doomed flight.

A leading aviation safety expert has suggested that the fatal crash of Air India Flight 171 may have been the result of deliberate human action, raising, for the first time, the possibility of a pilot-induced crash. Captain Mohan Ranganathan, one of India's leading aviation experts, has pointed to the sequence of fuel cutoff switches and cockpit audio to suggest that the crash may have stemmed from deliberate actions taken in the cockpit, potentially even suicide.

"No significant bird activity is observed in the vicinity of the flight path," the report released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in the early hours of Saturday said.

The report also did not mention any possible sabotage and instead indicated a possible fuel switch as the reason behind the crash that was one of the deadliest in recent times.

“Our thoughts remain with the loved ones of the passengers and crew on board Air India Flight 171, as well as everyone affected on the ground in Ahmedabad. We continue to support the investigation and our customer," Boeing said.

"We will defer to the AAIB to provide information about AI171, in adherence with the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organisation protocol known as Annex 13," it added.

A month after the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that killed 270 people, a preliminary report into the worst aviation accident in India in decades showed the engines' fuel cutoff switches shifting from cutoff to run within seconds of each other. 

"Why did you cut off?" one of the pilots was heard asking the other in the cockpit voice recording. The other pilot responded that he did not do so.

As the aircraft was losing altitude, it initially made contact with a series of trees and an incineration chimney inside the Army Medical Corps compound before impacting the northeast wall of Building A. The distance between the tree on which the aircraft made its initial contact and the point on Building A where the aircraft impacted is 293 ft. 

As the aircraft moved forward, it continued fragmenting and collided with other structures and vegetation. The impact witness marks on the building and aeroplane indicated a likely nose-up attitude (about 8 degrees) and wings level.

The probe report revealed that after takeoff, the aircraft impacted the BJ Medical College hostel, which is 0.9 NM from the departure end of Runway 23. The Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) was not activated during this event. The wreckage, from the first impact point till the last identified aircraft item, was distributed in an area of approximately. 1000 ft x 400 ft.
