This comes a day after the Lok Sabha passed a legislation to ban online games played with money as it looks to check rising instances of addiction, money laundering and financial fraud through such applications.
Earlier in the day, B Sudershan Reddy, INDIA bloc's pick for the post of Vice President filed his nomination in the presence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

The Rajya Sabha on Thursday agreed to send the Constitution (One Hundred & Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and The Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 to a Joint Committee, consisting of 21 Lok Sabha members and 10 Rajya Sabha members to be nominated by the Speaker and Deputy Chairman respectively.
The committee has been directed to submit a report on the last day of the first week of the winter session of Parliament.
Union Home Minster Amit Shah moved in the Upper House that the three bills be sent to a joint committee, amid relentless sloganeering and shouting by Opposition. The motion was adopted through a voice vote.
Online Gaming Bill: Offences And Penalties
- Offering/facilitating online money gaming: up to 3 years imprisonment and/or Rs 1 crore fine
- Advertising money games: up to 2 years imprisonment and/or Rs 50 lakh fine

- Repeat offences: 3-5 years imprisonment and fines up to Rs 2 crore

Online Gaming Bill: Impact On $3.8 Billion Gaming Industry
The government's move to declare online gaming that involves real money will impact India's $3.8 billion gaming industry. The real-money gaming sector, reportedly accounts for approximately 86 percent. It no longer makes a distinction between skill and gambling. Under the bill gaming apps that require users to pay money to win cash will be banned.
According to All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), the E-Gaming Federation (EGF), and the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS), the industry has attracted Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of over ₹25,000 crore till June 2022 and currently supports over two lakh direct and indirect jobs.

The online gaming bill will help promote the country as a game manufacturer's destination while also discouraging online gambling, which has destroyed thousands of families, Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told NDTV. It is because of the horrific results of the online money gaming, the bill had overwhelming support, he added.
The bill - which proposes complete ban on offering, operating, or facilitating online money games, be it based on skill, chance, or both -- was passed by the Lok Sabha today. Offering or facilitating online money gaming would draw a fine of Rs 1 lakh and a 3-year jail term.

Who Is B Sudershan Reddy, Opposition's Candidate For Vice President Polls
- Justice Reddy (retd) was born on July 8, 1946, to a farmer family in Akula Mylaram village of then Ibrahimpatnam taluka in the Rangareddy district of present-day Telangana.
- He obtained a law degree from Osmania University in Hyderabad in 1971 and was enrolled as an advocate with the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council. He handled writ and civil cases in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
- Before becoming a judge, he had worked as a government pleader in 1988-90. He briefly worked as Additional Standing Counsel for the central government in 1990 and was also the legal adviser and standing counsel for Osmania University.
- He became a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995. He was appointed the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2005. He became a Supreme Court judge in 2007; retired in 2011.
- In March 2013, Justice Reddy (retd) became the first Lokayukta of Goa. However, he resigned months later, in September, on personal grounds.
