New Delhi:

By-Election Results 2026 Live News Updates: The Congress won in both Karnataka seats, while NCP's Sunetra Pawar won with a record margin of over 2 lakh votes from Maharashtra's Baramati. The BJP won in four seats in Gujarat, Nagaland, Tripura and Maharashtra.

In the seven seats in Karnataka, Nagaland, Gujarat and Maharashtra, bypolls were held last month following the deaths of sitting MLAs. The bypoll in Goa's Ponda constituency was declared "null and void" by the Bombay High Court. These included Bagalkot and Davnagere South in Karnataka, Baramati and Rahuri in Maharashtra, Koridang in Nagaland, Dharmanagar in Tripura, and Umreth in Gujarat.

Necessitated after the death of then Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28, the Baramati bypoll is expected to be smooth-sailing for the late Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief's wife Sunetra Pawar, who now serves in her husband's place in the state Cabinet. With no major political party fielding candidates against her and her family's strong hold on Baramati, she won with over 2 lakh votes in her first ever Assembly poll. Congress had fielded Akash More but the party later decided to withdraw his candidature.

The election win was crucial for Sunetra Pawar to fulfil a Constitutional provision that requires a deputy chief minister to become a member of one of the two houses of the state legislature - assembly or council - within six months of taking oath.

In Maharashtra's Rahuri, BJP MLA Shivaji Kardile's death in October last year death last year necessitated bypolls, which his son Akshay Kardile contested against NCP (SP)'s Govind Mokate and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi's Santosh Chalke.

In Karnataka's Bagalkot and Davanagere South, which voted on April 9, Congress saw a decisive win. The bypolls were necessitated by the deaths of senior Congress MLAs HY Meti (Bagalkot) and Shamanur Shivashankarappa (Davanagere South).

The BJP fielded former MLA and 2023 defeated candidate Veerabhadrayya Charantimath from Bagalkot, and a fresh face, Srinivas T Dasakariyappa, from Davanagere South. Congress' Bagalkot candidate Umesh Meti is the son of HY Meti, while Samarth Mallikarjun from Davanagere South is the grandson of Shamanur Shivashankarappa.

In the Umreth Assembly constituency of Gujarat, a by-election was necessitated following the death of sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar in March. Six candidates contested the seat, with the main contest seen between BJP nominee Harshad Parmar, son of the late MLA, and Congress candidate Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan. The BJP won the bypolls here.

Six candidates - Jahar Chakraborty (BJP), Amitabh Datta (CPIM), Chayan Bhattacharjee (Congress), Bibash Ranjan Das (Amra Bangalee), Brajalal Debnath (Independent), and Sanjoy Chaudhury (SUCI) - sought an election from Tripura's Dharmanagar, with the BJP emerging winner.

Counting of votes were also held in Nagaland's Koridang Assembly seat, where bypolls were held after the death of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L Imchen. Six candidates were in the fray for the seat, including BJP nominee Daochier I Imchen, who is also the consensus candidate of Peoples' Democratic Alliance (PDA) government led by Naga Peoples' Front (NPF), amd won the election. Others who contested were Congress candidate T Chalukumba Ao, NPP's I Abenjang, and Independents Imchatoba Imchen, Imtiwapang, and Toshikaba.

By-Election Results LIVE: AAP Says Conspiracy In Goa, Congress Approaches Top Court

The Congress approached the Supreme Court against the cancellation of the Ponda assembly seat byelection in Goa, party leader Girish Chodankar said. The people of Ponda deserved to vote and have their MLA. Campaigns were fought, ballots were issued, candidates were ready, but just 16 hours before polling, the bye-election was struck down, he noted.

The Aam Aadmi Party alleged a "political conspiracy" between the Election Commission of India and BJP. Addressing a press conference during the day, Goa AAP president Valmiki Naik alleged the bypoll notification was deliberately delayed by the ECI to ensure the tenure of the new MLA would be less than a year.

Bypoll Election Results LIVE: Why Ponda Bypoll Was Cancelled?

The Bombay High Court's Goa bench on April 8 quashed the Election Commission of India's notification for the Ponda byelection in Goa, citing violation of the Representation of the People Act, as the legislature's term is set to expire in less than a year.

Two registered voters in the constituency had moved the HC challenging the validity of the notification on the ground that less than one year of the current Goa legislative assembly's term was left. The term will expire on March 14, 2027.

The court agreed with the contention, noting that as the result would have been declared on May 4, the winning candidate would have got only about nine months as an MLA.

By-Election Vote Counting LIVE: A Baramati Smooth-Sail For Sunetra Pawar?

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP president Sunetra Pawar, who is contesting her first assembly poll, is most likely to sail through riding a sympathy wave, and given her family's strong hold on the constituency.

No major political party has fielded candidates against her, making her election a mere formality. The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) did not field any candidate against Sunetra Pawar, giving a virtual walkover to her. Congress had fielded Akash More but the party later decided to withdraw his name.

During the voting process, she urged voters to support her as a tribute to her late husband Ajit Pawar.

Ajit Pawar had won the Baramati Assembly seat, a bastion of the extended Pawar family, for the last several decades.
