Politically crucial state Uttar Pradesh sends 80 parliamentarians to the Lok Sabha. The Election Commission had announced a seven-phase polling for all the 80 seats of Uttar Pradesh. In the 2014 election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BSP) had won 71 seats in the state and secured 42.63 per cent of the votes, while ally Apna Dal bagged two seats. The Samajwadi Party (SP) won five seats with a vote share of 22.35 per cent. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) did not win any seat while securing 19.77 per cent of the votes. The Congress registered wins on two seats, bagging 7.53 per cent of the votes. 

The BJP is facing a tough contest in all the Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh due to the alliance of Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal. The Congress is likely to cut into votes of both the BJP and the combined alliance. Of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party is contesting on 37 seats, Bahujan Samaj Party on 38, and the Rashtriya Lok Dal on three seats. The alliance has left two seats, Amethi and Rae Bareli, for the Congress.
