Punjab will vote in a single phase, on May 19, the last day of the seven-phased national election. The results of the staggered polls will be announced on May 23.

About Punjab

Punjab has 13 Lok Sabha seats and 117 Assembly constituencies in the state. The names of constituencies in Punjab are Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Khadoor Sahib, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Anandpur Sahib, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Faridkot, Firozpur, Bathinda, Sangrur and Patiala. Punjab will vote in a single phase, on May 19, the last day of the seven-phased national election. The results of the staggered polls will be announced on May 23.

According to Census of 2011, Punjab has a population of 27,743,338 crores comprising of 14,639,465 males and 27,743,338 females.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP- Shiromani Akali Dal combined emerged as the largest party by winning 6 seats in the state. The Akali Dal won 4 seats and the BJP won 2 seats for the parliament.  The Aam Admi Party (AAP) made a stunning debut in the state as the third alternative in the narrative by winning 4 seats. The Congress had won just 3 seats then.

In the state elections, Congress made a comeback three years later by winning two thirds of majority in the assembly and defeating the ruling SAD-BJP combine. The party also won the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha and Shahkot assembly by-elections, municipal and panchayat polls by huge margins in the past two years.

The pre-poll narrative this elections has been dominated by national security issues in the state following the February 14 Pulwama terror attacks.
