About Kannur

The Kannur constituency will go to polls on April 23. In the third phase of 2019 general election, Kannur will vote along with other constituencies in Kerala--Vadakara, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Ponnani, Palakkad, Alathur, Thrissur, Chalakudy, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Mavelikkara, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Attingal, Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod.

The Kannur Lok Sabha constituency consists of Taliparamba, Azhikode, Kannur, Irikkur, Dharmadam, Mattannur and Peravoor legislative assembly seats.

Congress has a stronghold in the Kannur constituency. It was won the seat for eight terms. From 1984 to 1998, Congress candidate Mullappally Ramachandran won the seat for five consecutive terms. In 1999 the party lost the seat to CPI (M). K.Sudhakaran regained the Kannur seat for the Congress party in 2009.

In 2014 CPI (M) candidate P K Sreemathy was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha from the Kannur seat. She defeated her nearest rival Congress' K Sudhakaran by a margin of 6566 votes. She will be contesting for the seat this time as well.

In the same pattern as CPI (M), Congress is also not fielding any candidate for the Kannur seat this time. K. Sudhakaran who had contested the election last time, has been represented by the Congress this time.

Incumbent MP P K Sreemathy is the only woman Member from the Left Movement in Lok Sabha.

A total of 1212678 voters are expected to exercise their franchise this time in the Kannur constituency, which includes 570043 male voters, 642633 female voters and 2 third gender voters. The voter turnout in this constituency was 81.06% in 2014 general election.

7026 votes in the State were exercised under the NOTA option.

This time, a total of 13 candidates are contesting for the Kannur seat 7 of which have filed their nomination as independent candidates.

Among other contenders are Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) nominated C. K. Padmanabhan, SUCI (Communist)'s Adv. R. Aparna, Social Democratic Party Of India candidate K.K. Abdul Jabbar, Kuriakose from Secular Democratic Congress, Praveen Arimbrathodiyil, Radhamani Narayanakumar, K. Sreemathi, K. Sudhakaran, K. Sudhakaran and Sudhakaran PK.
