About Bastar

Bastar is one of the 11 Lok Sabha constituencies of the 10th largest Indian State, Chhattisgarh. Bastar was among the 91 seats that went to polls in the first phase of general election, on April 11. The constituency consists of eight segments - Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Bastar, Jagdalpur, Chitrakot, Dantewada, Bijapur and Konta-all of which are reserved for the scheduled tribes.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been winning the Bastar seat since 1998. Baliram Kashyap was elected to the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Lok Sabha from this seat. He died in 2011. The BJP fielded his son Dinesh Kashyap in the by-election and managed to retain the seat. Dinesh Kashyap was re-elected from the constituency in 2014 general election.

Unlike other constituencies, Bastar has also been a stronghold of independent candidates. In three consecutive terms out of five times independent candidates have represented this seat in the parliament.

The BJP fielded its Bastar district chief Baidu Ram Kashyap. He is up against Congress's Deepak Baij and CPI nominated candidate Ramu Ram Maurya. Aaytu Ram Mandavi of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is also contesting in Bastar.

Altogether, 1,89,16,285 voters, including 94,38,463 women and 709 members of the third gender, are eligible to cast their votes.
