The Assam Election 2021 will be fought for the state assembly's 126 seats with at least 64 seats needed to gain the majority. The Assam election schedule was announced by Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora on February 26, along with the schedule for four other states. The election would be fought in three phases and the voting dates in Assam would be March 27, April 1, and April 6. The election would be fought mainly between the ruling BJP alliance and the opposition Congress alliance. The BJP alliance includes Asom Gana Parishad and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL). While the AGP will fight on 26 seats, the UPPL will field its candidates on eight seats. The Congress, that ruled the state for 15 years before finally losing to the BJP in 2016, is not going solo for the first time. The party is contesting the election in an alliance with former rival Badaruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF, regional outfit Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM) and three Left parties. The Assembly election 2021 will be fought in five states - Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal. The schedule for all the five states was announced by the Election Commission of India with the announcements of Assam election dates on February 26.
