Machilipatnam is one of the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra Pradesh. In the 2014 elections, Konakalla Narayana Rao of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was elected from the Machilipatnam parliamentary seat. He got 5,87,280 votes. His closest opponent, Kolusu Partha Sarathy of the YSR Congress Party, received 5,06,223 votes.

Congress candidate Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao was elected to parliament from this seat in 1957. Five years later, independent candidate Mandala Venkata Swamy Naidu represented Machilipatnam in the Lok Sabha.

From 1967 to 91, the seat remained with the Congress. YA Prasad was elected in 1967, and Nageswara Rao Neduri in 1971. In 1977 and 1980, Maganti Ankineedu was elected from the Machilipatnam Lok Sabha seat, and in the 1984 and 1989 Lok Sabha elections, Kavuru Samba Siva Rao emerged victorious.

KP Reddaiah Yadav of the TDP won from Machilipatnam in the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. In 1996, another TDP candidate, Satyanarayan Kaikala, was sent to parliament. In 1998, Kavuru Samba Siva Rao from Congress was elected. In 1999, Ambati Brahmanaiah from TDP was elected, and in the 2004 General Election, Ramakrishna Badiga of the Congress won on the Machilipatnam seat. Konakalla Narayana Rao was elected to parliament in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections as well.

There are seven assembly segments under the Machilipatnam Lok Sabha constituency. These are Gannavaram, Gudivada, Pedana, Machilipatnam, Avanigadda, Pamarru and Penamaluru.

Machilipatnam went to the polls in the first phase, on April 11. While Konakalla Narayana Rao continues to be the TDP candidate, the BJP has fielded Gudivaka Ramanjaneyulu (Anji Babu) and the Congress has given a ticket to Gollu Krishna.
