About Guntur

Guntur is one of the 25 parliamentary constituencies in Andhra Pradesh. In the 2014 national election, Jayadev Galla from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was elected. He received 6,18,417 votes. His closest opponent was Balashowry Vallabhaneni from YSR Congress (YSR Congress) who received 5,49,306 votes.

This seat has mostly been a Congress stronghold. In 1957, Kotha Raghuramaiah from the Congress was elected to parliament from Guntur. He went retain Guntur till the 1977 election. In the 1980 Lok Sabha election, NG Ranga was elected on a Congress ticket and was elected for three consecutive terms and remained the lawmaker from Guntur till 1991.

In 1991, SM Lal Jan Basha from the TDP was elected from Guntur. In 1996, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao was elected on a Congress ticket. He was elected again in the 1998 election.

In 1999, Y Venkateswara Rao from the TDP was elected. In the 2004 and 2009 elections, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao was elected on a Congress ticket.

There are seven assembly sections in the parliamentary constituency. These are Tadikonda, Mangalagiri, Ponnuru, Tenali, Prathipadu, Guntur West, and Guntur East.

Guntur voted on April 11, in the first phase of the 2019 national election. While Jayadev Galla is again contesting on a TDP ticket, the BJP has fielded Jayaprakash Narayana Valluru, and YSRCP has fielded Modugula Venugopala Reddy.
