Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute Completes 70 Years, Platinum Jubilee On 18 Feb

CMFRI To Celebrate Platinum Jubilee

New Delhi: Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) will celebrate its platinum jubilee on 18 February 2017. The one year long celebration will be inaugurated by the Kerala Governor Justice P Sathasivam. The event will begin at 2.30 pm at the CMFRI headquarters, Kochi. Deputy Director General (Fisheries) of ICAR, Dr J K Jena, New Delhi will preside over the function. Established in the year 1947 as a Marine Fisheries Research Station, CMFRI joined Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) two decades later, in the year 1967.

Country's leading marine fisheries research centre will observe the event for successful completion of 70 years in the sector.

Since its establishment the institute has been a pioneer in accomplishing marine fisheries research in the country like sea farming, coastal mariculture, biotechnological applications of marine resources, biodiversity studies and so on.

CMFRI has spread to 11 regional research centres situated at Mandapam Camp, Visakhapatnam, Veraval, Mumbai, Chennai, Calicut, Karwar, Tuticorin, Vizhinjam, Mangalore and Digha. Apart from this, it also has 15 field centres spread across the coastal regions of the country along with KVK at Narakkal, Ernakulum.

CMFRI has displayed an unparalleled research acumen and unbridled commitment which helped in boosting the marine fish production and management of the fisheries sector and for the livelihood of 40 lakh fisherfolk of the country, says the PTI report. The institute has grown significantly in size and stature over the past seven decades, emerging as a leading tropical marine fisheries research institute in the world.
