The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed a fresh set of amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, signalling a stronger push towards cleaner mobility and a more digital transport ecosystem. The draft notification includes changes that could directly benefit electric vehicle owners, commercial fleet operators, and automotive component manufacturers, while also simplifying regulatory processes. Among the most notable proposals is an additional five-year operational life for cleaner-fuel vehicles, a move that could significantly improve the economics of green mobility in India.
Longer Lifespan Proposed For Green Vehicles
Under the draft amendment, vehicles powered by electricity, hydrogen, and compressed natural gas (CNG) could receive an additional five years of operational age compared to conventional petrol and diesel-powered vehicles.
The proposal is particularly significant for commercial operators and fleet owners, where vehicle replacement cycles are closely tied to business viability.
