Iran unveils new assault boats

Tehran: Iran on Monday inaugurated the mass production of two types of missile-launching assault boats, part of a series of announcements unveiling domestically-built military hardware.

State TV showed footage of the two boats, dubbed Zolfaghar after a famous sword, and Seraj, meaning light.

The Zolfaghar is equipped with cruise missiles, and the Seraj is a high-speed patrol boat with a fibreglass body.

Iran's Defence Minister, General Ahmad Vahidi said the new hardware would help provide security for the region under IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps) control.

The commander of IGRC naval forces General Ali Fadavi claimed that the average speed of the new Iranian vessels was "twice that" of some American boats.

The inauguration came the day after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad unveiled Iran's first domestically-built long-range unmanned bomber, Karrar.

That inauguration came two days after Iran test-fired a new surface-to-surface missile.

Iran frequently makes announcements about new advances in military technology that cannot be independently verified.
