An Indian-origin mother charged with the murder of her three-year-old boy was allowed out of jail under guard to view his dead body in Scotland.
Rosdeep Kular was taken from Cornton Vale women's prison, near the city of Stirling, to a funeral parlour at Kirkcaldy in Fife where Mikaeel Kular's body was being kept.
The visit is understood to have taken place on Tuesday, a day before Mikaeel was laid to rest.
His 33-year-old mother was not present at the private funeral service at Kirkcaldy Crematorium.
Mikaeel's sister Renuka, 5, paid an emotional tribute to her brother saying: "We love and miss you."
His brothers, David, seven, and Tarun, nine, read poems during the 35-minute service.
Mikaeel's step-grandfather, Bangarpet Krishnaswamy, said the siblings did "exceptionally well" in what had been an "emotional day".
"It was a private, respectful, non-religious service - that is what the family wanted. This chapter had come to an end and it was a very difficult time for everyone. It has been an emotional day as we said farewell to Mikaeel and he can now rest in peace," he told 'Edinburgh Evening News'.
"We do not comment on individual prisoners," a spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service said.
Kular has twice appeared in private at Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with her son's murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
She made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.
Mikaeel's body was discovered in woodland in Fife on January 17, a day after he was reported missing from his home in Edinburgh.
Following his disappearance, Police Scotland issued his picture and appealed to the public for help in finding him. Hundreds of volunteers from the local community joined police and specialist teams as they searched the surrounding area.
Kular was formally arrested and charged in connection with her son's death on January 18.
Mikaeel's death certificate was released earlier this week, revealing he suffered internal bleeding and peritonitis - inflammation of the thin lining of the abdomen.
