200 people lift 10-tonne bus in China to rescue woman

People gather around a bus which knocked down a woman as it turned a corner in Shenyang

About 200 residents together lifted an over 10-tonne bus to rescue a young woman trapped underneath in Shenyang, northeast China's Liaoning Province on Monday morning.

A surveillance video shows the woman was crossing the road at around 08:42, when she was accidentally knocked down by the bus as it turned the corner.

After realizing the vehicle had hit something, the bus driver immediately stopped the bus and got out to check, finding the woman trapped under the wheel.

The driver called out and passengers got off the bus to offer help. Vendors from a nearby market and passersby also rushed to the scene to join the rescue effort.

"We all ran out of the building to help," said a vendor from the market. "(There were) about 200 people."

Together they lifted the bus, while firefighters pulled the woman out from under the wheel.

The woman was rushed to hospital. Her condition is currently stable, although doctors say they may need to amputate her legs.

From the hospital the woman's family expressed great gratitude to all kind-hearted people who helped rescue her.

"I really thank them for saving my younger sister," said the woman's sister.
