Dow trade turns choppy, European markets slide

Stocks on Wall Street trade were mixed as traders awaited Alcoa's results to kick start the earnings season. Meanwhile, Angela Merkel and Nicholas Sarkozy warn Greece that it must take write-down debt held by private creditors to get the second bailout. Also, German exports jumped 2.5 percent in November with expectations that the fourth quarter growth may be stronger than expected.
