Lifeguards On Strike

A day after the death of a tourist in a lightning strike at Goa's Candolim beach, the opposition Congress today demanded explanation from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on the existence of the "much-touted" lifeguard system on the ground.

Lifeguards, who protect beaches in Goa, have decided to go on an indefinite strike from May 15 to press for their various demands.

Lifeguards across Goa beaches might go on a strike from coming week onwards "as government has failed to provide them relief which was assured in the past by the state tourism minister and labour minister", their union leader said in Panaji today.

A private company engaged in providing lifeguard services on Goa's beaches today warned its employees that they would be replaced with a fresh batch of lifeguards if they continue with the strike.

The strike by lifeguards in Goa over the demand for regularisation of services entered its fourth day today even as the private agency engaged to provide lifeguard services termed their move "unjustifiable".
