World T20: Rain wins, West Indies through to super eights; Ireland out

Ireland put up a brave fight after being reduced to 3-37 but were cut short by rain as the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled in the West Indian innings. West Indies are thus through to the super eights.

  • West Indies had the perfect start as Fidel Edwards bowled the skipper William Porterfield. The Irish skipper had a disastrous World T20, although he hardly had any chance to prove himself. While he got out the first ball here, against Australia he departed on the second.
  • Rain stopped play after just 5 overs when Ireland were 33/1. The match was then reduced to 19 overs a side.
  • After the delay, Ireland were quickly reduced to 37-3. First Niall O'Brien, who scored 25, then Kevin O'Brien, who got 13 and Gary Wilson, who got 21, rescued the day for the minnows.
  • Sunil Narine has been a terror for almost all concerned in this format. Ireland too could not play openly against him, although, he just got the one wicket in the match that of Ed Joyce.
  • It was Chris Gayle who stole the show though on the field despite the rains 'stealing the thunder' from the match. The swashbuckling opener was not only in good bowling form getting two wickets, but also was in great dancing form. His jigs after the dismissals were nothing short of spectacular.
  • The reserve umpire, Aleem Dar, looking up into the skies and hoping for a miracle. That was not to be though as West Indies went through to the super-eights without even registering a victory.
