RP Singh's blunder, Jadeja's grit takes Chennai home against Bangalore

It was a thriller of the finest quality as Ravindra Jadeja, Chris Morris took Chennai Super Kings home against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chepauk. Fine innings by AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli were negated by Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni and S Badrinath's performances.

  • It was a thriller of the finest quality as Ravindra Jadeja, Chris Morris took Chennai Super Kings home against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chepauk. Fine innings by AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli were negated by Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni and S Badrinath's performances. (BCCI Image)
  • Needing 16 runs to win off the last over, Jadeja hit Rudra Pratap Singh for 11 runs in the first three balls. Morris then reduced the equation to two runs needed off one ball before Jadeja edged an overstepped delivery from RP Singh straight to the throat of Rampaul at third-man. Amidst confusion, drama, ecstasy and disappointment, Chennai romped home by four wickets with a ball to spare. (BCCI Image)
  • Bangalore had the worst possible start for them with the in form Gayle losing out the battle of Chris's to South Africa's Morris. He scored 4 off 10 balls before edging one to skipper Dhoni who took a comfortable diving catch. In terms of the law of averages though, Gayle's dismissal was perfect, as sandwiched between his innings of 92* and 85* have been scores of 1 and 13. (BCCI Image)
  • Chris Morris could have been the chief destructor but De Villiers ruined his spell with a blistering 20 runs off his fourth over to end with figures of 3/40. (BCCI Image)
  • Chennai were brilliant in the field as ever. Badrinath seen here diving to save a boundary. (BCCI Image)
  • Chennai then struck again as Ashwin-Dhoni duo combined to out-fox the young Agarwal. Kohli, who played steady at a run-a-ball at this stage, was then joined by Ab de Villiers as Chennai looked to tighten the screws.

The Bangalore skipper had a let-off as umpire Anil Chowdhary could not hear a faint tickle off the bowling of Dwayne Bravo. Dhoni and Bravo looked bemused. (BCCI Image)
  • Even De Villiers came into his own after that with a flurry of boundaries off Bravo and Nannes to bring RCB's innings back on track. (BCCI Image)
  • Kohli was then given another life as Bravo, who had a chance to get his 'revenge', dropped him off his own bowling. RCB skipper then completed his half-century and immediately decided to open up, hitting Morris for a huge six. Morris then exacted revenge in the same over to first remove Virat for 58 off 47 balls and then immediately got Dan Christian (in for Henriques) for 2. (BCCI Image)
  • Bangalore started to stumble as De Villiers got stuck at the other end and Bravo then removed Ravi Rampaul for a duck. (BCCI Image)
  • R Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers for Chennai with figures of 1/28 in his 4 overs. Chris Morris could have been the chief destructor but De Villiers ruined his spell with a blistering 20 runs off his fourth over to end with figures of 3/40. (BCCI Image)
  • Chennai too did not have the brightest of starts losing Murali Vijay to West Indian Ravi Rampaul for 2 off 5 balls. Bangalore's wicket-keeper Arun Karthik and Rampaul went up early but replays proved to be inconclusive. Vijay though looked disappointed as he went past Michael Hussey shaking his head. (BCCI Image)
  • Hussey followed Vijay to the pavilion soon after, trying to hit a Vinay Kumar shortish delivery beyond deep backward square leg boundary. He just managed to hand the simplest of catches to Mayank Agarwal, departing for 6 runs off 16 balls. (BCCI Image)
  • Bangalore seemed right on top at this stage with the bowlers firing on all cylinders. (BCCI Image)
  • Experienced S Badrinath and Suresh Raina then hit the ground running for Chennai to counter-attack after early jolts. While Badri was a bit lucky with RP Singh putting down a sitter off Vinay Kumar, Raina looked in prime form blasting boundaries all around the Chepauk with style. (BCCI Image)
  • All seemed hunky-dory for Chennai at 66/2 when Bangalore introduced Syed Mohammad, who was playing in place of KL Rahul. He first removed Raina for 30 off 22 balls, who, looking to clear mid-wicket got a top edge, giving a simple catch to Murali Kartik at short thirdman. (BCCI Image)
  • Mohammad then accounted for the set Badrinath in his next over to reduce Chennai to 78/4, in a spot of bother. Badri scored 34 off 29 balls. (BCCI Image)
  • MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja decided to play cautiously for a few overs before the skipper cut loose in Ravi Rampaul's third. He dispatched him for a four and a humongous hit to the roof of the MA Chidambaram stadium. (BCCI Image)
  • The crowd came alight with MSD in full flow. Dhoni and Jadeja brought up their 50 partnership in 32 deliveries as Chennai fought back with vengeance. (BCCI Image)
  • 29 needed off two overs, Rampaul struck twice to send Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo back. However, a cool-headed Jadeja ensured that it was Chennai's game from there on. (BCCI Image)
