CAG report takes the lid off Army's Golfgate scam

New Delhi:

For all their hardships, leading the good life, when possible, is very much the Army way of life. And playing golf is often the done thing to do.

But when the Army acquires golf carts by calling them electric multi-utility vehicles, there are bound to be questions. And that's exactly what has happened in a report by the Controller and Auditor General.

Golf carts, the report says, were bought by the Army under the guise of buying Electric Multi Utility Vehicles meant for Army hospitals.

Golf was obviously very important to the Army since another batch of golf carts was bought as track laying recee vehicles.

They were sanctioned for use by the Regiments of Army Engineers, which was headed by Lt General Daljit Singh. A total of 1.17 crore was spent on them.

Twenty two of them are currently being used in three Army golf courses under the western command.

RTI applicant and lawyer Guneet Chowdhary has been trying to investigate the matter for a long time.

The government now says it will investigate.

It is not just buying golf carts, CAG also indicts the security forces of spending over a 1000 crores on buying HAL choppers which they allege cannot fulfill their primary need of flying over 6,500 feet.
