Killed for religion in Haryana village

Fatehabad: The early morning calm in the tiny village of Samen in Haryana was shattered on Sunday by killings of a young 18-year-old couple.

The bodies of Shaan Mohammad and Reena were found near a government school in the village. They were killed allegedly for falling in love outside their religions.

The boy's Muslim family alleges Reena's Hindu parents had them killed.

"About a year ago we came to know about this affair and that is why we sent him to Punjab to study, but the truth is that Reena's family murdered them," said Shaan's uncle.

The couple had been in love for over a year. When Reena's parents found out, a furious family had her sent away to Kaithal, over 100 kilometres away.

She came back a few days ago to visit her maternal uncles who are now the prime suspects in the murders. Poisonous pills found close to their bodies made villagers initially suspect suicide, but blood around the spot and injuries on the boy told another story.

"We found poisonous pills near the bodies," said Jagwant Singh Lamba, Superintendent of Police, Fatehabad.
