Karachi: A bomb targeting a local police official killed at least three people in Pakistan's port city of Karachi on Thursday, police said.

The explosion took place near a tailor's shop in the old vegetable market in the city's eastern neighbourhood.

"The blast killed police official Shafiq Tanoli and two others," senior local police official Tanvir Ahmad Tunio told AFP.

He said there were at least five people in the shop at the time of blast, which targeted Tanoli.

Another local police official confirmed the attack and casualties.

Karachi, a city of 18 million people which contributes 42 per cent of Pakistan's GDP, has also been plagued for years by sectarian, ethnic and political violence.

Nobody has so far claimed responsibility for the latest bomb attack but the city is also wracked by militants, especially the Taliban.
