Arvind Kejriwal t-shirts for party workers? Election Commission allegedly objects

The Election Commission has reportedly asked Arvind Kejriwal not to give T-shirts with his party's name -the Aam Admi Party -to supporters because it violates rules for campaigning.

New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal, who is running for office in Delhi, has a question: is it illegal to distribute T-shirts brandishing his party's name to volunteers?

The Election Commission has reportedly asked Mr Kejriwal not to give T-shirts with his party's name -the Aam Admi Party -to supporters because it violates rules for campaigning.

Officials say that it's not possible to determine whether the t-shirt receivers are party workers or voters.

The Election Commission's rules preventing parties from making any offers or gestures that could influence voters ahead of an election, ban the distribution of shirts, but don't refer to their more casual avatar.

Mr Kejriwal has asked the commission to specify whether t-shirts are off-limits.

Delhi votes on December 4 for its next government. Mr Kejriwal's party, which has pivoted its campaign on fighting corruption, is making its debut in these polls.

In Gujarat, the BJP is distributing thousands of kurtas and saris emblazoned with "NaMo", the moniker for the party's prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi. The habiliments cannot be passed around in the five states where elections have been announced.
