US President Donald Trump is in the Situation Room of the White House as Iran launched attack on the US base in Qatar two days after the US offensive on Iranian nuclear enrichment sites. Reports said President Trump is monitoring the Iranian retaliation from the room that had seen dramatic moments on Saturday as the US launched its "Operation Midnight Hammer" on three Iranian sites.

Late this evening, explosions sounded from across Qatar's capital Doha, shortly after a Western diplomat said there had been a credible Iranian threat against the US-run Al Udeid air base, reported Reuters, citing a witness.

A statement from the Iranian Armed Forces said it has targeted the Al-Udeid base in Qatar "with a devastating and powerful missile attack in Operation Besharat Fatah".

Iran said its action was a response to the "aggressive and shameless attack by the United States on Iran's nuclear facilities and sites".

"Whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you... The number of missiles used in this successful operation was equal to the number of bombs the United States used in its assault on Iran's nuclear facilities," read a statement from the Secretariat of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.

Reports said Qatar has confirmed that there has been no casualty and that it reserves the right to respond following the Iranian attack. The Qatari Foreign Ministry has condemned the attack as a clear breach of its sovereignty, airspace, and international law.

Qatar has temporarily closed its airspace, forcing planes to divert away from Doha - one of the world's busiest airports.

Earlier this evening, the US embassy in Qatar had told US citizens they should shelter in place "until further notice".

On Saturday, the US had launched a 20-minute mission targeted three key nuclear facilities in the Iranian regime - Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. It was the first direct US military strike on Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

In a message to the nation, President Trump -- who said on Thursday that he would give himself two weeks to decide on bombing Iran -- had said, "Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated. Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier".

"If peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speed and skill. Most of them can be taken out in a matter of minutes," he had added.
