US Midterm Election Results Live: Vote-Scanning Machine Malfunction To Delay Counting In New York's Westchester County
A judge has granted permission for elections officials in a major New York county to move thousands of paper ballots to a secure warehouse after a technical problem caused vote-scanning machines to malfunction.
The issue will delay the counting of votes in a competitive congressional district until at least Wednesday.
The New York Board of Elections said machines at locations throughout Westchester County would not accept paper ballots when polls opened Tuesday because of a programming glitch.
Elections officials said the problem happened when they made a software update for one municipal contest after the machines had been prepared and tested. Machines in the other municipalities continued to use the original software and therefore would not recognize the ballots.
Voters were instructed to put completed ballots in bags that would be safeguarded to be processed later. The bags were to be transported under police escort to a county warehouse to be scanned and counted under the supervision of representatives of political parties, election officials said.
The Westchester County Board of Elections said the ballot counting was to begin at 11 am Wednesday.

Becerra repeatedly tied his opponent, Republican Steve Hilton, to the president and promised to defend California against Trump's policies on everything from immigration to voting rights.
Becerra will be California's first Latino governor since the late 19th century.
US Midterm Election Results Live: Adam Hamilton, Who Took Democrats To Victory In Kansas, Was Once A Republican
Adam Hamilton, the pastor of a Methodist megachurch who was registered as a Republican until recently, had considered running as an independent before entering the race as a Democrat.
He campaigned as a moderate, kept his distance from national party leaders and pledged not to back Chuck Schumer as Senate majority leader. He also criticized how former president Joe Biden's administration handled immigration.
Hamilton largely aimed his attacks at Marshall and congressional Republicans rather than the president.
"I'm not running against President Trump," he said at their final debate.
US Midterm Election Results Live: Democrats Win US Senate In Kansas For First Time Since 1932
Democrat Adam Hamilton won a US Senate seat in Kansas on Tuesday, according to US media projections, unseating Republican incumbent Roger Marshall and becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate race in the largely rural, conservative state since 1932.

The 37-year-old state legislator, former middle school teacher and Presbyterian seminarian will become Texas' first Democratic senator since 1993, laying bare how voter frustration midway through Trump's second term imperiled Republicans deep inside typically safe turf. The victory is a rejection of Trump's pick for the seat and threatens Republicans' control of the Senate, where Democrats needed to gain four seats to retake the majority.
US Midterm Election Results Live: Democrats Flip Senate Seat In Ohio
Former Senator Sherrod Brown defeated Republican Senator Jon Husted in Ohio, flipping a seat that was crucial to Democrats' strategy to retake the chamber and providing a ray of hope for the party's longer-term prospects in a former swing state that had turned sharply to the right over the last decade.
Brown's victory caps a remarkable turnaround for the longtime Democrat. He lost his Senate seat just two years ago, defeated by newcomer Bernie Moreno, only to jump back into the political fray for a successful comeback. The campaign featured a rush of more than $500 million in spending from both sides and their allies.

US Midterm Elections: Janeese Lewis George Is Washington's Next Mayor
Janeese Lewis George will be the new mayor of Washington, DC. She practically ran unopposed in Tuesday's general election after winning the Democratic primary earlier this year.

Republicans were hoping to regain a foothold in the region while Democrats didn't want to lose ground as they try to retake control of the chamber.
Pappas told supporters his win was a "victory for Team New Hampshire over the broken status quo."

Alaska: Former Democratic congresswoman Mary Peltola challenges Republican Daniel Sullivan. Her strong standing among voters has made another Trump-voting state unexpectedly competitive.
Iowa: Republican congresswoman Ashley Hinson and Democrat Josh Turek compete for retiring Republican Senator Joni Ernst's seat, while soaring agricultural and energy costs are prominent issues.
Kansas: Democratic pastor Adam Hamilton is challenging Republican Roger Marshall in a state that has not elected a Democratic senator since 1932. Tight polling has prompted Trump to campaign for Marshall.
Michigan: An important Republican pickup opportunity pits former congressman Mike Rogers against progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed to fill the seat of retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters
US Midterm Election 2026: Elections May Bring In Wave Of Historic Firsts For Some States And The Country
Featuring one of the most diverse slates of both Democratic and Republican candidates in recent years, this midterm election has set up a possible wave of historic leadership firsts across the country.
Voters on Tuesday could propel into office the first Native American female governor and Native women senators, the first Black female governor, the first openly gay male U.S. senator and the first Muslim U.S. senator, among other milestones. Most are Democrats, but the GOP could also break ground.
While some of these candidates have avoided focusing on the inherent historic value of their race, gender, religion or sexual orientation, some voters' rights advocates are celebrating how the electorate has expanded.
“These firsts show how our country is changing,” Alexis Anderson-Reed, president and CEO of State Voices, a network of advocates for civic engagement and equity in democracy, said via e-mail.
“For years, people of color and LGBTQ communities have organized, knocked on doors, talked to voters, held conversations, and done the hard work of saving our democracy," Anderson-Reed said. "These wins are because of them.”
US Midterm Elections 2026: First Polls Close In US Midterm Elections
The first polling stations closed Tuesday in the US midterm elections, with Democrats hoping to secure control of Congress and the future of President Donald Trump's agenda in the balance.

US Midterm Elections 2026: Early Poll Reveals Voters' Anger With Trump, His Policies
President Donald Trump has repeatedly encouraged voters to pretend he's on the ballot this Election Day. He's not, of course. But there is reason to believe that Tuesday's midterms, above all, will be a referendum on his performance over the last two years.
History, polling and early voting numbers suggest it could be a difficult night for Trump's Republican Party, though the political map, not to mention a fresh round of gerrymandering, could limit Democratic gains.
Voters are in the mood for change, according to the AP Voter Poll, which found that roughly three-quarters of voters say they feel "angry" or "dissatisfied" with the way things are going in the country today. Most appear to blame the Trump administration for high costs. About 6 in 10 say higher than usual prices are "more because of Trump's policies" rather than "more because of factors outside Trump's control."
US Midterms Elections 2026: How Americans Vote in Midterms Could Reshape Trump's Presidency
Millions of Americans voted Tuesday in a midterm election seen as a referendum on Donald Trump that could wrest control of Congress from Republicans and impose major restraints on the president's remaining two years in office.
Polls predict the Democrats will win a majority in the House of Representatives and possibly seize the Senate on the back of voter resentment at an unpopular president, soaring energy costs and the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Republicans losing the House would give Democrats the power to stall Trump's legislative agenda and launch sweeping investigations of his administration.

US Midterms Elections 2026: Some Voters Disrupted By Weather, Machine Issues
The final day of voting in this year's midterm elections arrived Tuesday against a backdrop of uncertainty after a year in which President Donald Trump has tried to interfere in how states run their elections and sown doubts about the outcome should Republicans lose.
Millions of Americans already cast their ballots, with early voting turnout on pace to eclipse that of the last midterm elections. In contrast to the president's continued rhetoric about election cheating, voting so far has unfolded with relatively few problems.
US Election 2026 Results | Why New York County Ballot Machine Glitched
The vote-counting issues bedevilling Westchester County stem from a program update that happened after polling equipment was initially prepared and tested, according to the state Board of Elections.
A change in an unnamed local race required an update that wasn't made to machines in other counties, the board said. As a result, those tabulators were unable to recognise completed Election Day ballots.
State officials said they're working with their counterparts in Westchester County to restore ballot-scanning capability to at least one vote-counting machine at every polling location. Voting continues through established emergency ballot procedures.

US Election 2026 Results | What Los Angeles Voters Are Thinking
Voters in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., are considering candidates for mayor aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America.
If Nithya Raman captures the mayoralty in LA and Janeese Lewis George wins in Washington, the two cities would follow New York's lead, where democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor in 2025 after promising to transform city government to restore power to the working class.
Both cities are heavily Democratic.
Raman is trying to oust Mayor Karen Bass, who's fighting to keep her job after a rough first term that included the deadly Palisades Fire, which ignited when she was out of the country and caught the fire department unprepared. The former political allies are progressive Democrats. (Associated Press)

US Election 2026 Results | How Data Centres May Shape The Polls
Opposition to data centres in communities across the US has snowballed from a local issue into a midterm election weapon in statewide races from Texas to Ohio to Florida amid the artificial intelligence revolution.
Candidates spent millions to paint their opponents as data centre patsies - giving them nicknames like "Data Nate" - as one-time data centre boosters worked to distance themselves or get tough on the industry.
They had an ally: Trump urged communities to accept data centres, as the industry spent millions to boost its image.
Meanwhile, the issue crossed traditional ideological boundaries.

Speaking with ANI from Manhattan as voters headed to the polls in the 2026 US midterm elections, Lasher launched a sharp rebuke of the current leadership in Washington, pointing directly to President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and congressional Republicans.
"We have people who have taken control of the White House, Donald Trump, Mike Johnson in the House, all of their minions who have made this country less affordable, are dismantling the rule of law for their personal profit," Lasher said. "Today we are going to begin the process of taking the country back, addressing issues of affordability, restoring the rule of law."

US Midterm Elections: With US Midterms Underway, Courts Rebuff Trump's Pressure On State Election Officials
In the hours before polls opened for the US midterm elections on Tuesday, federal judges issued a series of rulings restricting the Trump administration's unprecedented efforts to pressure state election officials over alleged noncitizen voting.
Over the past several months, as President Donald Trump's fellow Republicans geared up to defend their majorities in both houses of Congress, the administration ramped up a crackdown on noncitizen voting, which Trump allies say is a major problem even though evidence suggests it is exceedingly rare.
That push has repeatedly encountered resistance in the courts. Federal judges have found that the Trump administration was overstepping its authority by wading into election administration, a responsibility that the US Constitution assigns to the states, and that lists it had generated of alleged noncitizens registered to vote were inaccurate and risked disenfranchising naturalized US citizens.

US Midterm Elections: Ballot Machine Glitch Hits New York County In Tight House Race
Ballot machines malfunctioned Tuesday in a New York county that will help decide a closely contested House of Representatives race, though officials said votes for the US midterm elections are still being counted.
The Westchester County Board of Elections "is aware of an issue involving paper ballots that is preventing voting machines from accepting ballots at polling locations throughout the county," a statement read.
It "wants to reassure every voter that your vote matters, your ballot will be secure and your vote will be counted," with ballots instead placed in emergency bags.

"We have to keep America great. We're great now. We were terrible two years ago," Trump told the "Fox & Friends" show as Americans voted in elections that could see his Republican Party lose control of Congress.
Polls predict Democrats will win the House of Representatives and have a shot at the Senate, and Trump, whose own ratings have plunged, targeted his last-minute message at his right-wing base.

US Elections: Americans Vote In Midterms Set To Upend Trump Presidency
Americans voted on Tuesday in pivotal midterm elections with Democrats hoping to seize control of Congress and impose the first significant checks on Donald Trump's chaotic second term in the White House.

The election amounts to a nationwide judgment on Trump, with the mood turning sharply against Republicans amid anger over soaring living costs and the war against Iran.
