Geneva: Swiss police today were "actively searching" Geneva for suspects who may be linked to last month's attacks in Paris, a statement said, adding that the alert level in the city had been raised.

A statement from the Canton of Geneva's security department said it had received information on Wednesday from Swiss federal authorities concerning "suspicious individuals likely to be in Geneva or the Geneva area."

"As part of the investigation following the Paris attacks, the Geneva police and its partners are actively looking" for these individuals, the statement added.

No additional information about the people being sought was provided but the statement said more police had been deployed across the city which lies on Switzerland's border with France and is just over 500 kilometres (310 miles) from Paris.

"Geneva police have increased their level of vigilance," the statement said.

Security guards posted at the United Nations complex in Geneva were carrying sub-machine guns, a departure from normal practice.
